A reporter asked: The US Department of Commerce website adjusted the wording of its May 12 press release on AI chip export controls, changing "Using Huawei Ascend chips anywhere in the world violates US export control regulations" to "Warning the industry about the risks of using advanced Chinese computer chips, including specific Huawei Ascend chips." What is China's comment on this?

Answer: At the Ministry of Commerce's regular press conference on May 15, China has already made its solemn position clear on this issue. After the US side issued the relevant guidelines, China, through the China-US trade and economic consultation mechanism, has engaged in negotiations and communication with the US side at all levels, pointing out that the US actions seriously undermine the consensus reached at the high-level China-US meeting in Geneva and demanding that the US side correct its mistakes. China has noted that the US side has recently adjusted the wording of the guidelines' press release, but the discriminatory measures and distortion of the market's essence in the guidelines themselves have not changed.

The US side abuses export control measures, imposing stricter controls on Chinese chip products under unfounded charges, and even interfering with Chinese companies' use of chips produced in China within China. The US side's reach is too long, which is a typical act of unilateral bullying, and China firmly opposes it. The US actions seriously harm the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, seriously threaten the safety and stability of the global semiconductor production and supply chain, and seriously impact global technological innovation. Tripping others up won't make oneself run faster. This approach of attempting to contain and isolate other countries through unilateral protectionist measures will ultimately harm the US's own industrial competitiveness, and the result will only be shooting oneself in the foot.

China urges the US side to immediately correct its wrong actions and stop discriminatory measures against China. Both sides should jointly uphold the consensus reached at the high-level meeting in Geneva, strengthen communication through mechanisms such as China-US trade and economic consultations, effectively manage differences, negotiate solutions to each other's concerns, and promote the building of a sustainable, long-term, and mutually beneficial bilateral trade and economic relationship. If the US side insists on its own way and continues to substantially harm China's interests, China will certainly take resolute measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
