In the semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, and high-end chemical industries, the transport and storage of ultra‑high‑purity chemicals impose nearly stringent requirements on container and piping materials: extreme chemical inertness, ultra‑low leachables, broad temperature‑range resistance, and the ability to undergo precision machining. PFA (perfluoroalkoxy alkane, a melt‑processable fluoropolymer) is precisely the benchmark material that meets these demands.
1. Corrosion resistance and chemical inertness
PFA is virtually impervious to chemical attack—whether exposed to concentrated sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric, or hydrofluoric acid; strong alkaline solutions such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide; or even powerful oxidizing agents and a wide range of organic solvents. This exceptional resistance stems from the extraordinarily strong carbon–fluorine bonds in its molecular structure and the tight shielding of the carbon backbone by fluorine atoms, which effectively prevents external chemical species from attacking the molecular framework.
2. Purity and Low Leaching Characteristics
Thanks to its inert nature, PFA exhibits virtually no interaction with the liquids it contacts, resulting in negligible release of metal ions, organic impurities, and other contaminants into the process medium. In particular, electronic‑grade PFA can achieve extremely low leaching levels, making it the material of choice for the conveyance and storage of ultra‑high‑purity chemicals.
3. Temperature Resistance and Application Range
PFA remains stable under extreme temperatures, enabling long-term, reliable operation across a broad temperature range—from cryogenic conditions approaching –200°C to high‑temperature environments up to +260°C—demonstrating exceptional thermal stability.
4. Advantages in Processing and Forming
Unlike PTFE, which belongs to the same family, PFA exhibits melt‑processable flow characteristics, enabling it to be molded into complex parts via injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and other conventional thermoplastic processes, while also being weldable. This flexibility facilitates the fabrication of components such as bottles, fittings, valves, and connectors, and simplifies pipeline connections—key process advantages that set PFA apart from PTFE.
5. Electrical and Surface Physical Properties
PFA is an excellent electrical insulator with a low dielectric constant and outstanding insulation performance, making it well suited for high‑frequency, high‑reliability electrical applications. At the same time, its extremely low surface energy imparts non‑stick and low‑friction properties; its inner walls are exceptionally smooth, reducing fluid resistance and preventing the accumulation of contaminants, thereby facilitating clean‑in‑place conveyance. Furthermore, PFA is typically semi‑transparent, allowing visual monitoring of liquid levels or flow conditions within the vessel.
