According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean government recently announced plans to increase investment in the semiconductor industry from the current 26 trillion won to 33 trillion won (approximately 170.28 billion RMB), aiming to further revitalize the domestic semiconductor industry.

Investment Subsidy Policy

South Korea's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Choi Sang-mok, stated that this plan will provide 30% to 50% investment subsidies to small and medium-sized enterprises producing cutting-edge materials, parts, and equipment, with an additional 70 billion won (approximately 361 million RMB) allocated in the budget. This measure aims to encourage companies to upgrade and expand semiconductor facilities.

South Korea's semiconductor industry holds a significant position in the global market, particularly excelling in the memory chip sector. Samsung and SK Hynix, two major South Korean companies, have long held the top two positions among global memory chip manufacturers.

Strategic Planning and Future Goals

In recent years, South Korea has continuously strengthened its semiconductor industry layout, successively introducing national-level measures such as the "K-semiconductor strategy," and repeatedly increasing investment. For example, the investment scale of South Korea's top ten manufacturing companies in 2024 was 114 trillion won, and the plan is to increase it to 119 trillion won (approximately 61.404 billion RMB) in 2025.

The "top ten manufacturing industries" cover semiconductors, automobiles, displays, secondary batteries, petrochemicals, steel, bio, shipbuilding, machinery and robotics, and textiles. Among them, the semiconductor industry will focus on cutting-edge memory chips, focusing on expanding investment to meet the continued growth of global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) equipment.

Through these measures, the South Korean government hopes to consolidate its global competitiveness in the semiconductor industry while promoting technological upgrading and synergistic development of related industrial chains.
