According to the latest data from market research firm Gartner, the global semiconductor industry showed significant growth in 2024, with major changes in market size and competitive landscape.
Total global semiconductor industry revenue reached $655.9 billion in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 21% compared to $542.1 billion in 2023, setting a new historical high. This growth was mainly driven by two core factors:
1. A surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure construction, especially the reliance of data centers on high-performance GPUs (Graphics Processing Units);
2. A simultaneous rise in memory prices and demand, including the strong recovery of the DRAM and NAND flash memory markets.
Driven by the surge in AI infrastructure construction and data center GPU demand, Nvidia climbed to the top spot for the first time with revenue of $76.692 billion, surpassing Samsung Electronics and Intel for the first time. Samsung ranked second with revenue of $65.697 billion, a 60.8% increase, while Intel ranked third with $49.804 billion.

SK Hynix also made significant progress last year, jumping from sixth place in 2023 to fourth place in global semiconductor sales. The company's sales increased by 91%, second only to Nvidia among the top ten companies in terms of growth rate. Analysts attribute SK Hynix's rapid growth to its leading position in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) field and the rise in the average selling price (ASP) of its memory products.
Summary
The semiconductor industry in 2024 is characterized by "AI leadership, memory recovery, and reshaped landscape." Driven by both technological innovation and market demand, competition among leading companies will become even more intense.
