On September 22, 2025, NVIDIA and OpenAI announced a landmark strategic partnership aimed at jointly building an AI data center with a capacity of at least 10 gigawatts (GW). The project is expected to kick off its first phase in the second half of 2026, leveraging NVIDIA’s latest-generation Vera Rubin AI platform and utilizing millions of NVIDIA GPUs to power the training and deployment of OpenAI’s next-generation AI models. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated that the 10 GW of computing power would require roughly 4 to 5 million GPUs—about twice NVIDIA’s total annual GPU shipments. Constructing a 1 GW data center is estimated to cost between $50 billion and $60 billion, with approximately $35 billion allocated toward procuring NVIDIA chips and systems. As a result, the total investment for the 10 GW facility is projected to reach into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

NVIDIA has pledged to invest up to $100 billion in phases, with the first $1 billion cash injection already paid out immediately after the agreement was signed. Subsequent investments will be gradually released as computing power is deployed. Under the terms of the deal, NVIDIA will also acquire a stake in OpenAI, further solidifying the strategic partnership between the two companies. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, emphasized that computing infrastructure is at the heart of the future economy, and this collaboration will drive breakthroughs in AI technology while enabling individuals and businesses on a massive scale. OpenAI plans to launch several new, compute-intensive products in the coming weeks, with select features initially available to Pro subscribers.

This collaboration will strengthen OpenAI's technological capabilities and create complementary synergies with its partners, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and the Stargate Project, significantly solidifying NVIDIA's global leadership in AI infrastructure. The market responded positively to the news, with NVIDIA's stock price surging rapidly after the announcement, reaching a new all-time high. The project is massive and globally pioneering—its output power rivals that of ten conventional nuclear power plants—marking a new milestone in the AI computing race and paving the way for advancements in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) technology.
