On November 4, 2025, California time, according to the quarterly silicon wafer industry analysis report released by the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG), a division of SEMI, global silicon wafer shipments in the third quarter of 2025 increased by 3.1% year-on-year, reaching 3,313 million square inches (MSI), compared to 3.214 billion square inches during the same period in 2024. However, when compared quarter-over-quarter, shipments declined slightly by 0.4% from 3,327 million square inches in the second quarter of this year, highlighting that segments such as epitaxial wafers continue to show signs of weakness amid the ongoing recovery process.
SEMI SMG Chairman and GlobalWafers Vice President Li Chongwei stated: "Silicon wafer shipments in the first nine months of 2025 achieved significant year-on-year growth, primarily driven by increased shipments of 300mm wafers used in advanced logic, cloud infrastructure, and storage applications. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence has spurred substantial investments in cutting-edge manufacturing processes, further boosting demand for wafers."

Silicon wafers are the fundamental material for most semiconductors and serve as a critical component in all electronic devices. Highly engineered wafers can reach diameters of up to 300 mm, making them ideal substrate materials for manufacturing the majority of semiconductor devices.
