SEMI Report: Global Silicon Wafer Shipments Increased 13% Year-on-Year in the First Quarter of 2026

On April 29, 2026, Pacific Time in California, the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) under SEMI released its quarterly silicon wafer industry analysis report, which revealed that global silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 13.1% year over year to 3,275 million square inches (MSI), compared with 2,896 million square inches in the same period of 2025. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, shipments declined by 4.7% from 3,437 million square inches in the fourth quarter of 2025, consistent with typical seasonal patterns.
Ginji Yada, Chairman of SEMI SMG and General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Division at SUMCO Corporation, stated: “Demand for silicon wafers related to AI data centers remains robust, encompassing advanced logic chips and memory chips, and has now expanded to power-management devices as well. Overall, demand for silicon wafers has improved, though the recovery remains uneven. Many semiconductor companies have noted improvements in the industrial semiconductor segment, and as wafer inventories are depleted, this is driving a broader recovery. Weak smartphone and PC shipments in the first quarter of this year may reflect the impact of capacity-allocation decisions for AI high-bandwidth memory (HBM) on tightening memory supply.”

Silicon wafers are the foundational material for most semiconductor products, and semiconductors are the indispensable core components of all electronic devices. These highly engineered, thin, circular wafers, with diameters up to 300 mm, serve as the substrate material in the vast majority of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
