On August 6, local time, US President Trump announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors. However, companies that have already built factories in the US, or have pledged to build factories in the US, will be exempt from this tariff.

Because Apple has pledged a $600 billion investment in US manufacturing, the company is likely to receive an exemption and will not have to pay the planned chip tariffs.

Trump stated: "If you build in the US, or pledge to build, or are in the process of building, you don't have to pay anything." He added that if companies pledge to move manufacturing to the US but fail to deliver, the tariffs will be "added" and "collected later."

The Trump administration exempted semiconductors and derivative products such as iPhones from reciprocal tariffs from countries like China and India, but Trump has consistently promised to impose high fees on chip imports.

Apple's chips come from TSMC, and there were previous concerns that chip tariffs could significantly impact its costs. It now appears that Apple will avoid any additional tariffs on the chips used in its devices. Trump announced this news at a White House press conference attended by Apple CEO Cook, who announced an additional investment in US manufacturing. It remains unclear when the semiconductor tariffs will take effect.
