We learned from GlobalFoundries' official website that on November 17, local time, GlobalFoundries (GF) announced the acquisition of Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a silicon photonics foundry headquartered in Singapore. This acquisition marks a pivotal step for GF as it advances its innovation strategy and strengthens its leading position in the silicon photonics field.
It is reported that this acquisition brings together AMF's manufacturing assets, extensive intellectual property, and talented technical experts, significantly expanding GF's silicon photonics capabilities and positioning the company as the largest pure-play silicon photonics foundry by revenue. Leveraging AMF's more than 15 years of manufacturing expertise, GF will now serve the demands of long-haul optical communications, computing, LiDAR, and sensing applications on AMF's 200mm platform based in Singapore. Furthermore, GF plans to scale the platform to 300mm as market needs grow, ensuring a reliable global supply for AI data centers, telecommunications, and next-generation applications.
Additionally, to complement this acquisition, GF plans to establish a Silicon Photonics R&D Center of Excellence (CoE) in Singapore. This cutting-edge R&D center will collaborate with A*STAR, Singapore’s leading public-sector research organization, to advance GF’s innovation roadmap by focusing on next-generation materials tailored for ultra-high-speed 400Gbps data transmission. This partnership will strengthen the company’s silicon photonics platform, enabling GF to deliver high-performance, secure data transmission solutions to customers worldwide.
