U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that President Trump is weighing whether to allow NVIDIA to sell advanced AI chips to China, and will make the final decision on this matter.

Lutnik said in an interview on Monday (November 24) that President Trump is considering input from "numerous, diverse advisors" as he weighs potential export issues. Last Friday, reports emerged that U.S. officials were holding preliminary discussions on whether NVIDIA could proceed with selling its H200 AI chips to China.

Lutnik said in the interview: "This decision-making power rests entirely with Trump. He will decide whether we move forward with this matter."

Meanwhile, Lutnik also acknowledged the tension between fostering economic expansion and safeguarding national security. Allowing the sale of H200 processors to China would mark a significant easing of the restrictions first imposed by the U.S. in 2022.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is eager to sell products in China.

Lutnik stated that Jensen Huang has "good reason" to want to sell the company's products in China, adding that "many others" also agree that this should be considered.

"This is truly a very interesting question," Lutnik said. "Trump has all the information. Many experts are consulting with him, and he’ll ultimately decide what to do next."
