On July 9, 2026, GlobalWafers, the world’s leading silicon wafer manufacturer, officially announced that it has reached a comprehensive, long-term strategic cooperation agreement with memory‑chip giant Micron Technology. The two companies have finalized a ten-year framework for a long-term silicon wafer supply agreement (LTA), while Micron is simultaneously providing $500 million in strategic financing to specifically support GlobalWafers’ expansion of its domestic U.S. wafer production capacity, thereby bolstering the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor industry’s upstream materials supply chain across the board.
As artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and the data center industry experience rapid expansion, global demand for advanced storage chips continues to rise, making a stable, localized supply of silicon wafers an essential prerequisite for the development of the storage‑chip supply chain. This collaboration represents a key component of Micron’s $3 billion investment plan to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain; $500 million in strategic funding will be entirely allocated to GlobalWafers’ 300‑mm native silicon wafer fab in Sherman, Texas, supporting capacity expansion, process R&D, and upgrades to manufacturing capabilities, thereby solidifying the foundation for domestic mass production of advanced large‑diameter silicon wafers in the United States.
Under the cooperation agreement reached by both parties, a ten-year long-term supply contract will be signed going forward. Leveraging this agreement, GlobalWafers will continue to deliver advanced silicon wafers in a steady and reliable manner, aligned with Micron’s medium- to long-term capacity roadmap, thereby securing a core raw-material supply for the production of Micron’s high‑end memory products, including DRAM and HBM. In addition, the two companies will jointly advance R&D on next‑generation silicon wafer technologies and cutting‑edge manufacturing processes, ensuring compatibility with the iterative requirements of multiple future generations of memory chips.
GlobalWafers stated that, as the only supplier currently participating in the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act with domestic mass‑production capabilities for 300‑mm advanced silicon wafers, its deep collaboration with Micron will significantly strengthen the U.S. semiconductor industry’s on‑shore manufacturing ecosystem, address critical upstream material shortages, and lay a robust supply‑chain foundation for long‑term technological breakthroughs and capacity expansion in the U.S. memory sector.
