On July 29, 2026, U.S. Pacific Time, the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) under SEMI released its quarterly silicon wafer industry report, which showed that global silicon wafer shipments in the second quarter of 2026 increased by 7.4% year over year, reaching 3,573 million square inches (MSI), compared with 3,327 million square inches in the same period of 2025. Shipments also rose 9.1% quarter over quarter from the 3,275 million square inches recorded in the first quarter of 2026.

Ginji Yada, Chairman of SEMI SMG and General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Division at SUMCO Corporation, stated: “Silicon wafer shipments posted steady growth in the second quarter, as robust and expanding AI‑related demand has broadened from advanced logic and memory applications to power devices, optoelectronics, and other markets. Meanwhile, industrial and automotive demand is recovering, while pricing pressures in the memory sector are weighing on PC and smartphone demand. Device manufacturers are making significant investments to expand capacity, and silicon wafer demand is expected to remain on an upward trajectory.”

Silicon wafers are the foundational material for most semiconductor products, while semiconductors themselves are indispensable core components of all electronic devices. These highly engineered, thin circular wafers, with diameters that can reach up to 300 mm, serve as the substrate material in the vast majority of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
